Why this matters

Azure cost exports sometimes fail with a server error and then succeed on the next try. Some reports cover only part of the month. Large tenants get rate-limited when they request a lot of data at once.

Each of these things can leave a gap in your Azure history. You normally find the gap when finance compares the Azure total in CloudZero to the Microsoft invoice.

CloudZero now retries temporary failures, keeps partial reports from overwriting data you already have, and retries the fetch for your Enterprise Agreement credits. Your Azure history stays complete, the connection status shows what happened, and your month-end total includes your credits.

What we built

Azure status and connection reliability is now generally available.

  • The status shows what happened. Each Azure connection shows one of three statuses. Healthy means the data arrived. Error means something failed and needs your attention. Retrying means Azure is limiting requests; CloudZero will keep trying on its own.
  • Temporary errors get retried. When Azure returns a server error for a report, CloudZero tries up to two more times before it marks the run as failed. In a recent 30-day period, errors like these caused 351 failed runs across 48 connections that were otherwise loading normally. Connections like those now stay Healthy.
  • Historical loads retry network errors. When you first connect Azure, CloudZero loads up to 12 months of history and now retries network errors along the way. If a month still doesn’t load, the run is marked as failed so that month can be loaded again.
  • Partial reports don’t overwrite your data. If Azure sends a report that covers only part of a month, CloudZero keeps the data it already has for that month.
  • EA credit fetches get retried. If you buy Azure through an Enterprise Agreement, Microsoft applies credits and adjustments that lower your bill. CloudZero fetches these separately and now retries the fetch if it fails. If every retry fails, the run shows it, so you know to check that month’s credits.

How it works

There’s nothing to turn on. Go to Settings, then Connections, and click an Azure connection. The latest run shows the result of each check, including authentication, report download, tags, billing period, credit balance and reconciliation. A failed check identifies the step to look at. If the connection shows Retrying, you don’t need to do anything.
