How does Notion AI pricing work? What does Notion AI actually cost an organization? Is Notion AI free? What are Notion credits? When is bundled AI the right buy? The invisible line item is the whole story Notion AI pricing FAQs

Quick Answer

Notion AI comes with the Business plan at $20 per member per month and with Enterprise at custom pricing, per Notion's pricing page; the standalone $10 add-on was retired in May 2025, and Free and Plus get a limited AI trial. Custom Agents add metered Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 monthly. Yearly billing saves up to 20%.

In May 2025, the line item that said “Notion AI” disappeared from invoices. (Notion AI itself, for anyone arriving cold, is the assistant layer built into the Notion workspace: writing help, workspace Q&A, meeting notes, and autonomous agents.) Not the product, the line item: Notion retired its $10-per-member AI add-on and folded full AI access into the Business plan, so the AI price became indistinguishable from the seat price.

That’s the whole per-seat AI story in one product decision. Bundling made the spend invisible by design, and invisible is how most organizations now carry it.

We hold the opposite philosophy about AI spend, in public. Our CTO published why he gives every CloudZero engineer a $5,000 monthly Claude Code token budget, to the dollar, with the reasoning attached, because a per-seat AI number you can see is one you can manage.

Notion AI pricing now sits at the other end of that spectrum: real money, roughly $10 a seat of it, wearing a workspace plan’s clothes. This guide makes it visible again.

How does Notion AI pricing work?

Here is the current Notion AI plans structure:

Plan Price AI access
Free $0 Limited Trial of Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes
Plus $10/member/month Limited Trial of Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes
Business $20/member/month Full Notion AI: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (beta)
Enterprise Custom Full Notion AI, plus zero data retention with LLM providers
Notion credits $10 per 1,000/month Meter for Custom Agents and Workers (beta), on Business/Enterprise; pooled, no rollover

Every price in this table is the yearly rate. On monthly billing Notion charges $12 for Plus and $24 for Business, and advertises savings of up to 20% for paying yearly.

Two structural facts drive every budgeting decision here. First, since the May 2025 Notion pricing restructure there’s no way for a new customer to buy Notion AI by itself: the plan price is the AI price.

Second, Notion has since added a usage-metered layer back on top: Custom Agents run on Notion credits at $10 per 1,000, per its pricing page, so an org-wide rollout now carries a fixed per-seat component and a variable credit component.

What does Notion AI actually cost an organization?

The bundle hides the number, so recover it by subtraction. For a workspace where Plus would otherwise suffice, the effective Notion AI cost is the plan delta between Notion Business plan pricing and the tier below it: $10 per member per month. Across a 500-member workspace, that’s a $60,000-a-year AI decision, incurred for every member whether or not they touch an AI feature.

That last clause is where rollout math lives or dies, because bundled pricing means adoption sets your real unit cost. For that 500-member workspace at a $10-per-member AI delta:

AI adoption rate Effective cost per active AI user
100% $10.00/month
60% $16.67/month
30% $33.33/month

Call it the 50% rule for bundled AI: below roughly 50% adoption, a $10 bundled-AI delta costs more per active user than a $20 dedicated seat. The general form: your breakeven adoption rate is the plan delta divided by the dedicated seat’s price. ChatGPT’s business tiers are the obvious comparison, and the same adoption-adjusted arithmetic governs GitHub Copilot’s enterprise seats and every other per-seat AI tool on the invoice stack.

None of that math says the Business plan is a bad buy; Business includes far more than AI, and workspaces that would upgrade anyway get the AI at an effective marginal price of zero. The math says something narrower: the sticker never tells you what AI costs your org. Your adoption rate does.

Is Notion AI free?

Only as a taste. Free and Plus don’t sell AI; Notion’s own plan table marks the Standard Credits allowance as “Limited Trial” on both, and its AI FAQ says Free and Plus users get a limited number of complimentary AI responses to try the features out.

Once it runs out on those plans, there’s no add-on to buy anymore; the upgrade path is the Business plan. For a solo user who wanted Notion AI without Business features, that path no longer exists, and the complaint threads ranking for this query are about little else.

What are Notion credits?

The metered tail of a per-seat product. Custom Agents, Notion’s autonomous automation layer, are free to try and then consume Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 per month, per Notion’s pricing page, and the same credits meter Workers, its beta custom-code layer. Credits are becoming Notion’s currency for anything autonomous.

The credit layer has three types. Business seats include 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month, both per seat and neither poolable; Notion credits are the shared balance an admin buys for the workspace. All of them reset monthly without rollover, and everyday AI editing draws on Standard credits rather than sitting outside the meter.

Budget-wise, this is hybrid pricing: a fixed seat floor with a variable usage ceiling. A Custom Agent spends its owner‘s Select credits first, even when shared with the team, and only reaches the workspace balance if an admin allows it, so the exposure is per seat before it is ever collective. If credit-based AI budgeting is new territory, the translation discipline is the same one we detail for fully credit-priced AI agent platforms: what matters is never the credit price, it’s your burn per completed task.

When is bundled AI the right buy?

Whether Notion AI is worth paying for comes down to which of four situations you’re in:

  • You’d buy Business anyway: SSO, permissions, and admin controls justify the tier on their own for most orgs at scale; the AI arrives at marginal cost zero, and the decision is about driving adoption, not price.
  • High-adoption knowledge teams: above the ~50% line, the bundle beats dedicated seats on price and wins on context, since the AI works inside your own workspace corpus.
  • Low or unproven adoption: run a measured pilot before an org-wide upgrade. A quarter of usage data beats a year of shelfware; a $60,000 bundled-AI decision is only a bargain if people show up.
  • Solo users or AI-only needs: the retired add-on was built for you and no longer exists. A standalone assistant subscription is now the cheaper path.

The invisible line item is the whole story

Here’s the strategic fact underneath all the plan mechanics: Notion AI’s per-seat cost never touches a cloud bill. It lands on a SaaS invoice or a corporate card, next to dozens of other per-seat AI tools doing the same thing, which is why this spend category blindsides finance teams that have world-class cloud cost tooling and nothing watching the SaaS budget.

Multiply one dissolved line item by every AI-bundling vendor on the stack and you get the AI cost crisis pattern: spend growing in places no billing export reports. It’s a large part of why we maintain a 150+ AI statistics library tracking where AI spend actually shows up, versus where budgets assume it does.

The fix is mechanical. CloudZero ships native billing connectors for eleven SaaS platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, Datadog, GitHub, and others, per our docs), and for every platform without one, Notion included, the documented path is AnyCost custom sources: format the invoice or billing export to the Common Bill Format and deliver it through the AnyCost Stream API or an S3 bucket. Seat costs land there.

Adoption and usage context arrives via the telemetry streams API; and both join cloud bills and token invoices in one financial control plane, allocated to the teams that actually use the seats.

That’s ordinary AI cost management extended to the invoices, and it turns “we pay Notion $120,000 a year” into “here’s cost per active AI user by team, and here’s which teams’ seats are shelfware.” Only the second sentence can defend a renewal.
